We've all done it but I'm looking for a good way to repair a fractured grain at a critical point in a relief carving. Its only about 3/4" long at the edge of a raised letter but it would really stand out if it breaks away. Some carvers I know use Superglue and I'm inclined to try it. However, something tells me that the wood then will not take stain very well. Am I right. Got a better idea? HarryC

When I get an oops while chip carving. If I'm lucky enough to find the chip, I put a small amount of Elmer's White Glue on the chip and hold in place for a couple of minutes. Then I recut after about 1/2 hr. Stains just fine. Bill K. |

I have used gorilla glue successfully when repairing a broken grain. Just on word of caution is that this glue expands out of the areas where you repair. Once dried the excess cuts away nicely and the repairs have been strong. Best of luck and let us know how it worked out. Jerry |

I've used Titebond 2 or 3 and I've used Gorilla Glue original and white. The Gorilla glue expands to 3 or 4 times it's original volume but trims off easily when dry. Titebond trims well too. CA glue (superglue) works ok too, but, like you said, it could effect the finish. Ed

Hi Harry, Elmers makes a stainable wood glue that might be good for this repair. Frank

It will affect the finish and it closes all the pores in the areas glued. I think carpenters glue would be best.

Thanks for the advise. I decided to use Elmers Carpenter's Glue. I won't be ready to stain for a few days yet, but I expect good results. Great community, these woodcarvers!
