| | oops Carving at lunch today because it's too darn cold to go for a walk. I was using my Double Cross and a thumb guard that I keep in my pocket. Really wish I'd had a carving glove since I put a good slice in my holding thumb. Took a couple minutes for the blood to stop but I was able to go back to carving after I put a bandaid on it. My own darn fault since I should have turned the carving around rather than carve towards my hand!

| | Re: oops mikeg, Whenever I nick myself while carving, I always blame it on something else. Like "on the garbage can when I am carryin out the garbage", "on carpet sweeper", "banged it against the stove when I was cleanin the burners"....you get it? Tom H |

Carry a packet of black pepper in your carving kit and when you cut yourself pour some on the cut. It will stop the bleeding right away. You can use those little pepper packages you get at the fast food places. Put the bandaid right over the pepper that stays on the cut.

| | Re: oops Mike it happens to all of us from time to time. Hope that the cut isnt too bad. If you are like me your whole hand or hands are nothing but scars anyway. Mine are always worse because I never wear a glove or thumb guard.

| | Re: oops Colin,
I'm glad to hear someone say they don't use a glove or thumb guard. I was taught to carve with out one.The reasoning behind it is if you use some type of protection, you become careless. When you do cut youself it's can be pretty bad because you tend to ignore where you're cutting. If you don't use a glove, you're normally aware of where your thumb & hands are. Yes I've cut my self a few times in eleven yrs. but, never seriously. Have been wanting to bring that subject into the forum but, I understand that the vast majority of carvers were taught to use gloves & wouldn't be comfortable without them.
Having said that, I'll probably slice myself to the bone next time I carve!! |

Wouldn't the pepper hurt like heck, or is it along the lines of aversion therapy? |

No pain at all. Try it the next time you have a chance. It really does an outstanding job.

Yes, I believe in placement of the hand or fingers. I still practice that, However, it
makes no sense to me not wearing carving gloves.
That is like playing pro football without protective gear! Would you?
Just my opinion!
