Default One year already!

As of yesterday I've been woodcarving for a whole year. At that time I thought woodcarving would be really fun, but boy was I wrong. It's absolutely WONDERFUL! Now I can't even imagine of life without woodcarving. I just love it. I am so happy that I took it up! Back then I had no idea I would try carving so many things, including “odd” things like golf balls, a ball-in-a-cage, pencils, clothes pins, pumpkins, and keychains. Nor did I think I would bother taking up chip carving, a little wood burning, or become interested in trying out wood spirits in walking sticks and trees! Lovely, really. I feel like I've done so much and also that I've done so little, which means there's plenty more to do! I find it incredible that most people my age (teens) don't even think of trying woodcarving! They sure are missing out, for woodcarving is truly a most wonderful thing!

Just for fun I'm going to do a little “now and then” carving, that is I'm going to carve another owl following the same pattern as my first carving. Should be interesting.

There, I'm done rambling joyfully for now.

Good for you carvity, I have been saying the same thing... So much wood ...so little time. I am looking for a piece of cottonwood bark that I can see in it a spotted linsang looking back at me. I have put a couple pieces aside for a tarsier ( great subject...Great toes? fingers ) I'm a bit inspired here with these varmints. The linsang is beautiful, I hope I can do agod job

OH, BOY! All that done in a year! You have definitely been making the best of your time and talent. Ain't carving just a Hoot? There are very few hobbies that afford the opportunity to explore so many options and at the same time be available anytime you find a piece of wood and your pocket knife. Here's to many more years!

Thank you all for your kind comments! May you all have many more carving years as well. And Artolver, glad to hear you're going to try the linsang and tarsier. I've been most curious about how someone would carve those HUGE tarsier eyes.

Fortunately for carvers there are TAXIDERMY eyes available that require insertion rather than carving. Here's one that could be used for a Tarsier. It is a bobcat eye and is available in several shades of the tan irs and in sizes from 10 to 36 mm. This one is from VanDykes, but Rinehart has the same type, as I'm sure do several other suppliers.

Tarsiers eyes? I will just try to carve them. I start with the nose and eyes first and just work on back. anxious to get to the feet. I will get one started next week.
