Default Old World Carvings

I want to share with fellow woodcarvers this photo of a woodcarved divider or partition in a church in a small village (Hedingham) near Cambridge, England. It is carved of oak or other hardwood, with multiple layers, piercings, spirals, etc. The spiral column on the right is actually part of the hinge which allows a passage through the partition. This work is four or five hundred years old!

One thing to remember when looking at outstanding craftsmanship like that is to remember that they did it without benefit of modern technology. Most of the tools we take for granted were centuries in their future. The tools they used were hand made for job. They didn't have a store to go to and purchase pre-made tools.
