Hi gang, Today is my birthday I just turned 61 sitting here doing a little carving my mind wandered (does that more and more the older I get) I got to thinking how old everyone on this board was. Now I dont expect the ladies to tell us the truth, women have a thing about how old they are. To me age is just a number I plan on being around to do a lot more carving. I wish I had discovered it early on in my life I just imagine how good I would have been had this happened I have only been at it for a few years. So I am interested in how old everyone is and what age they began carving. I certainly will understand if you do want to divolge your age it is a personal thing to some people, but I would like to know how long everyone has been carving. Colin

I turned 59 in July. Carved my first piece of wood in Aug., 1988, thanks to my hero Ron Ransom and his first book, 'Santa Carving'. Hmmmmmm that's 15 years...... doesn't seem that long.

59 in June, been cuttin' myself since I was 8! Back then we ALL had pocket knives and our 'prohibited' weapon was a slingshot. Had one of those, too! We carved whistles out of box elder shoots, and willow shoots, whittled toy guns out of scrap wood, carved our initials in trees, and played mubledy-peg, when we were't shooting pebbles at tin cans with those slingshots! Slingshots were the product of our pocket knives and crotches from maple or oak trees. Come to think of it, none of us would have had a whole lot of toys if we didn't whittle them, or nail them together out of scraps and branches. Al |

Colin, Happy Birthday. I turned 36 this Summer. I started carving last November with a basswood blank which is supposed to be a bobcat and an X-Acto knife. I never did finish that first attempt out of frustration of not knowing what the heck I was doing. But, it sure motivated me in wanting to learn. So, after a small investment in (bandsaw, books, knives, gouges, oh and bandaids) I plan on gaining more knowledge in carving and practice, practice. I am so excited about carving that I am actually going to quit another hobby I have been doing for some time now, beekeeping, so I can devote more time to carving. Actually, we are expecting another child in Feb. so I figured I certainly would not have time to do both. Plus, beekeeping can be a very, very expensive hobby (for some reason a beekeeper wants to keep on expanding, usually that is). Do you think I am going to find that out with carving too? Do most woodcarvers seem that they just cannot live without the latest and greatest tool? Take Care, Beeguy |
