Default Old Character 2011

I've done a number of these faces based on Mark Gargac's approach but I needed to do another one as they don't stay in my shop for long. I was considering using this carving as a possible piece for a small informal retreat I was asked to do. Carving out the face is pretty straight forward so I think a beginner might be able to carve one. All I added was some oil, sealer and some dark satin wax to bring out his features in the face. He is approx 8-10 high and carved out of basswood I got shipped in from the US.

That is really a striking face...I especially love the hair and the nose, both are done exceptionally well. Also, the size is impressive... I wonder how it would look in a frame..sort of like a photograph?

That might be what I'm going to do next. I have put these in a shadow box before and they look good framed. I just noticed in my pictures that I gave him quite a frown.
Thanks for looking.
Patrick

Hi Patrick. Very well done,I like him a lot.
As the piece is half a head, that is it is flat at the back, how would you classify the carving. As a relief carving or in the round carving.
Why I ask is because I have done similar for a local club comp and the judge wanted to place the carving in the relief section, to which I objected.

As usual Patrick, your face carvings are really great, and this one must be one of your best.

Really well done. I like it.

I have mounted items like this in a photo frame before, with burlap or canvas as the background. The texture of the cloth adds an interesting element,

Thank you Joe, John and Schaf.
John, I just mounted him inside a a dark frame with a dark backing - he looks alright with that approach.
Schaf - my understanding is that this would be classified as a deep relief carving as it is not all the way around. At times, I would hollow out the back to lessen the weight and get a different effect. A carver told me that it would then be classified as a mask. Others here with more knowledge on the topic could probably speak better to the question.

I think the layered effect in the hair is unique. I can't say I've ever seen it done that way before, I'm going to give it a try myself.

Patrick I really think the finish of this carving is excellent it seems to bring out the detail even more. I have a mountain man mask that I carved and put in a frame. Don't remember if I ever posted it but could again if you would like an idea of how yours would look in a frame.
