Default Now whatch' workin' on?

I'm working on a flower in cherry, and spent some time last night hollowing out the inside of a box I'm making for my wife. The lid is a Fairy scroll saw segmentation and the origional directions called for using a piece of 1/4"-plywood for the bottom, 3/4"-thick pine for the sides, another chunk of 1/4"-ply for the backerboard for the lid, and 3/4"-thick pine for the segmentation. I made the bottom out of 3/4" pine as well, so I could hollow it out and make the box deeper...

I must be getting better at sharpening--my chisels were whistling through that pine--with or across the grain.

Of Course it is!!!! Your last one was so popular, but got buried...so I took it upon myself to start another!!! And it doesn't have to be CARVING!!!! We all have other hobbies (I know it's hard to believe), but I believe we can learn a lot from things--even if they are not realated directly to carving!!!

Well, I swear, cross my heart and spit on the side walk that I really have had my nose to the grind stone the last week and a half ... but, of course, I had to sneak a little carving into the day. This is from one of our new packs that I have been working up. One is in the oil stain stage and the other when I have added his facial coloring.

I've been doodlin' some more. I have a request for a female tennis player and I cut out a small blank to see if I can get some flow built in before I make a 'real' attempt. I will take a few pictures (to post here) of the cut out and maybe some of my progress. This attempt will be of a man since I don't want to be worrying about the female features as I carve the first piece. As I explained - it's only a doodle.

I also cut a blank of a rather large version of Jesus praying at the Rock.....another request. I say large - large for me as I prefer small caricatures. Anyway, I used a picture to make a pattern to work from. I just missed a class with Helen Gibson which would have been perfect for getting me started on this project. This is a popular subject that she teaches in her classes.

I will also try to fit in some small individual caricatures that I will most likely never finish..............

PS - Susan - love the expression in the face(s) of your work. What are the dimensions?

I'm working with 4 other carvers/artists to create a 10 ft. totem pole. A local YMCA camp (Anokijig) is being sold off to raise capital and we're donating the totem to a group that's rasing funds to save the camp.

We're done with the carving and painting started today. That should be done tomorrow and I'll try to snap some more photos.

Well, got another cane in the hopper...a nice maple cane that will have an oak leaf and acorn motif, and a mouse poking his head out of a knot hole. I'll post some pics later.

I will be sure to stop by tomorrow to see all the photos! Mitchell and Colin, thanks! Woody is 4 quarter x 5" x 8" and was a delight to work. I liked him just wood but my Michael wanted color ... so!

KettleKarver, I do hope that you will make your totem pole adventure a thread of it's own. I, for one, would love to see any and all photos you have to share and here about the good people you are working with. Plus what ever you can share about the camp.

BobD, glad to hear your sharpening skills are growing, can't wait to see what you are making for your good woman.

Susan

As 'promised'.....remember that this is just a doodle - an experiment to see if I can put into wood what I "see".

I just sketched a rough profile and front view and cut it out on the bandsaw. It's supposed to be a tennis player. I plan on putting a tennis racquet in his hands later. In the first picture, I have started taking away some of the wood.
