I'm trying to finish up some old carvings from previous years that I just never got around to finishing; a bear, a cardinal, a big horn sheep, a santa. Then, too, I started on a Navy sailor man to give to my 84 year old dad for Christmas...he was a sailor and can remember those days so much better than any time since then! Then, I need to get started on a couple of little animals for my two Vermont Grandkids for Christmas--I try to carve an animal for each to go in their Noah's Ark. That ought to take me right up to spring....well...I hope it doesn't take that long!

BobD

Ship rigging 'looks' more complicated than it is, just a lot of repetition. Shrouds, ratlines, braces, stays and then running rigging. What ship is it you are doing? I can send you copies of what ever you need.

The difficulty with the Internet is that there isn't much online on specific models or 'how-to's'. Some good sites for more advanced builders....practicums, but I wouldn't advist those for starting out.

Let me know and I'll fix you up.

Bob

I think I need to do a few Santas.....It's getting close to that time of year.

I want to do something a little different, so I'll get a pattern sketched out by this weekend. My top three ideas are a snowboarding or snowtubing santa - with a squirrel or rabbit along for the ride. The other possible version would be a surfing santa. I don't like this idea as much because I can't quite visualize how to do the wave. I'd have a penguin riding along with this version.

After I get the line sketches, I will decide which looks best (on paper) and then do a quick-and-rough clay model. No details, just basic shapes - to take the 2D to 3D.

In between I'll do miniatures - just because I can't work on one thing at a time!

i think bobD's on the right track,
santas,

i always wanted to put the Louisiana 'Pap Noel' influence on santa, Will be thinking of just what effects could be carved,

i truly hated diaramas in school, and now it seams i cant carve just one figure they are all turning into scenes, or diaramas,

any ideas on 'Pap Noel'?
