Default 'Nother carving

As I promised, here is another carving but I wasn't sure whether to post it on the old thread with my other carvings or start a new thread. Well anyway here goes. The deer is carved from Tupelo Gum and the forest floor is made of planer shavings and sawdust in a recessed base. The antlers were made separately and inserted. Both the deer and the habitat were painted with oil paints. The deer is pinned on the log with a square brass pin and is removable for transporting.

What a great deer! I love the way you painted it and the forest floor. It accents the deer's motion really well. The little bitty parts like the antlers and tail and legs must have been a challenge. Mounting it with a removable pin was a good idea for transport. Really impressive piece.
Glad to have seen it.

Well presented Doug the way you have done that gives it the illusion of movement, great job.

Nice deer Doug. Great scene, lots of "energy" in the scene. Well done.

Sometimes presentation is 50% of the carving but you deer is OUTSTANDING and the way you have it set up is OUTSTANDING. Thanks for describing how you put the carvving scene together.

I'd have to agree with Colin on a great job with the illusion of movement! That's just really great!

Being in woodshop class 5 days a week I too have learned to be very resourceful and I also use the course shavings from the planer- to the finer sawdust powders produced by the bandsaw in many of my students (and my own) projects. By evidence of your picture you did a fine job on reproducing a forest floor for the deer. I did a miniature Indian tee-pee project during the past year and I used a combination of various sawdusts' to produce a plain green "lawn" look. I just spread on some Tightbond glue, then sprinkled the sawdust and "shook it all about"... dried, taped off the tee-pee with masking tape 'n newspaper, then used green spray paint and finally sealed it with Krylon acrylic sealer. These tee-pee's were shipped to our CEO at corporate headquarters to be used as gifts to big dollar donator's to our non-profit organization.

Nice job and thanks for posting!
