Default No such thing as scrap wood.

I never seem to throw away small scraps of wood. I have a house full of odd pieces of odd species. I use a lot of small stuff.....as you know.....on my ships, but have been whittling away lately while the wife shops or is at appointemnts. I'm hooked on these little Celtic knots, and keep trying different shapes in various woods. Some of these are Sandlewood, some Walnut and others .....who knows! Try them, they're fun and you can do them in any size you can think of.

Hi Bob

Nice work! You do them with just a knife or do you use gouges, chisels, etc.?

Thanks!

Nice ones Bob. Nice stain, but they look like Pretzels.

No stain Kenny, just oil and wax. Various woods though. I use kust knives on them, no gouges, and lots of filing and sanding. Never at a loss for something to do.

Bob, What a great idea, those are some real neat and unique carvings. I save all my scraps of wood also, but I dont know what I'm ever going to do with all of them.

Nancy..... those are about an inch and a half, to two inches wide, and about 1/4" to 3/8" thick, though you can do them in any dimensions. Smaller ones look nicer as jewellery, big ones as decorations on things. Very simple to do, but finish up so beautiful.

Cut the shape on a scroll saw, drill the holes out then scroll out the inside shapes. Then just carve off the shoulders of the shapes, to round them and shape the over/under parts where they overlap. I use a knife and files/sandpaper/sanding sticks.

Finish with a Danish Oil and wipe dry, couple of coats. After well dry, couple coats of paste wax and buff with a shoe brush and soft cloth. Use them as pendants with a strip of leather or hot glue a pin to the back and wear them. Can even glue them to doors, cupboards, boxes, card holders or whatever for an added touch. If you cut them out of thicker wood, you can carve both sides for a double sided pendant. The wax gives a nice warm feeling and wonderful texture to the wood.

I think .... no, I KNOW they make incredible Christmas tree ornaments.

Maybe those sizes are a bit small for the average tree but can't you just imagine them on a 3' or 4' tree?
That's breathtaking.
