Hi gang, You can always tell when it is raining outside I am sitting in front of he computer and not carving. This is a new commission I am doing the tree was dying and the people had it cut down but they knew before I did that I was going to carve it. They hunted me down and I started it yesterday and if the rain stops I will probably finish it today and will post a completed picture. It is on the www.picturetrail.com under woodspirit carvings. Colin

Great start Colin, I can't wait to see the finished pictures! Definitely not letting the hubby see them though, his list just keeps growing, don't want to give him any more ideas! Ha! Ha! Lots of rain here in Pennsylvania too, this weekend is the big Carver's Show in near by Cook's Forest. I took a couple Santas up last night to enter, it was pouring!! They are calling for it to clear up today and be nice for the weekend. I sure hope so, most of the vendors are outside and I'll be spending most of the weekend up there! I love it!! Perfect weekend, lots of carvers to talk to and lots of tools to look at (and buy!! ) Hubby takes me out to eat all weekend too....definitely a great time for this lady carver! Callynne

Hi Ho, I do have some fairly big chisels they remove a lot of wood fast I have some 3inch Fishtail gouges that do most of the bull work. I use an adz to take off the bark roughly in the size of the face I want to carve. Some times I remove the entire bark from the tree depends on what the customer wants. My basic cuts are with a chainsaw I have a small Husky 141 with a 12inch carving bar with a 1/4 chain and dime tip. With the chainsaw I make my stop cuts all around the face, eybrows, nose, beard then the rest is done with a hammer and chisel. I use arecioprocating power carver if I am carving soft wood but in hard wood it doesnt do much good. Then it is on to the chisels for the detail work. Should have the carving finished tomorrow will post a completed picture tomorrow night. Colin
