| | New wood spirit, but ? Here is a carving I just finished and wondering how to mount it.My idea is to make a lamp out if it.I have never made a lamp out of any of my carvings yet.I think if I made a nice base for it and found a lamp shade for it that it might turn out ok.Sorry I could not show the whole picture. It is 30" tall and 12" in diameter. The eye browls and mustache/beard are several coats of stain.I welcome your comments. Thanks,Davy |

| | Re: New wood spirit, but ? I've made quite a few lamps, but never one that tall. The hardest part will be drilling a hole the length of the piece. It's been awhile, but I think 3/8 is correct. Whatever size will accomodate a piece of all thread, tightly, should screw into the wood. Once you,ve done that, a piece of all thread and a lamp socket and your in business. Oh yeah, the base. Just drill it to match the hole in the lamp proper and make a cut out from the side to the hole you just drilled. This will allow the cord to come out the side. The 30" hole is going to be the challenge. I'd take a standard length bit and weld an extension on it, but you may not have the tools. |

| | Re: New wood spirit, but ? Thanks Ed,being an electrician I have a lot od tools at my grasp.Especially a 5' flexible drill bit.I also have a lot of 3/8 hollow rod I was going to mount behind it instead of drilling it.I might also cut it down and shave the back side for mounting.Anyway, this is the purpose of the thread to get some ideas.
Gene, Thanks for your commentI paint with stain and need lessons from Forest. |

| | Re: New wood spirit, but ? Ed sumed it up about being able to drill and sink the rod in the whole carving,I think thats the best way, which is more professional looking. This is mtn laurel?? Im sure it is but some might not know what type of wood it is like me and you do. I like that look you always have Davy in the faces you create. Love the thick go-t. It will be a real show piece as a lamp. Good job,Davy Forrest

| | Re: New wood spirit, but ? you can always cut the stick in half with a bandsaw, make the groove for your wire and glue the two halves back together. |

I like your carving! Looks real good.
If you scrape off the bark on that top piece, you already have a carving in the making. LOL

| | Re: New wood spirit, but ? I like HI-HO'S idea of cutting it in half.I never thoutht of that.Skip, you are right about the top part because I purposely chose this piece of wood because of the narled out part.I think removing the bark from that section might give him a little more character. The carving still needs a little work and I guess I should put it under WIP section.Anyway, thanx everyone for your ideas. They are keepers.Davy | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
