Default New to the site...old to woodworking

Been enjoying woodworking since 1988. Mostly furniture in the Arts & Craft style with occasional dabbles into Queen Anne.

I've always shied away from carving due to my fear of messing up an otherwise nice piece of work. My solution? Try very small floral carving like below in my attempt to do some Eastlake trim and furniture pieces.

The amount of material removed is minimal. Imagine a football half buried in the ground. I want to do that type of carving but don't know which tool is appropriate and successful. I bought some chip carving knives from Pfiel and they work OK but I feel there is a better way.

Any suggestions and advice?

Thanking in advance.

If you intend to "cut into the wood, deeply", you will most likely need carving chisels. There are other tools that will cut into the wood and remove shavings....inshave, scorp, etc...chisels will give you the best, most efficient control.

Pin.

Many roads lead to here. I hope you stay and give us your insights in how you are making the transitions and what difficulties you are facing and your methods of dealing with them while you are building up your carving knowledge.

I come from a similar background to you, so I will watch your progress with interest. I am more interested in Caricature carving but you do what floats your boat.

Pete

Honestly there must be a thousand different ways to do what you are talking about. Find someone on here that you like there work, and then go about finding out what tools they use.
