Why hello everyone... I'm thining about taking up carving, I enjoy working with wood and intricate things, but what would everyone suggest to me as i am considering this hobby ?

What kinda chisels etc. would be the best for me to look into...?

About how big of an area would i want to consider big enough to start carving?

Exactly how do you attach you project to something so it isnt mobile while your tring to carve it ?

What is your advice on carving?

Thank you to everyones help to the newbie...

Irmrus,
Welcome aboard, you will find this to be a great group.
You ask a lot of good questions and there are many different opinions, especially on tools. My best suggestion to you would be to scroll back and read past threads. You will find a wealth of great info to keep you busy for hours.
Good luck and have fun.
Jim

In my opinion a good place to start in woodcarving is "chipcarving" , you need a book by either Dennis Moor, or Wayne Barton and two knives, a chip knife and a stab knife.....next is some 1/4 by 4 x 4 slabs of basswood and off you go...where you go from there is up to you! This is fun and about as cheap as you can start into woodcarving as far as tools go.........again imhoHappy

Hi and welcome .

Tools, well simply put stay away from the crafter tools sold in craft stores. Rick from Settle sells some nice starter sets and can help a lot if you ask him.

A good starting point for information is www.carvingpatterns.com Lora Irish's site, give a lot of information and free patterns.

I would also suggest you look at http://www.littleshavers.com/NameTag.html
This is Ricks site , a good start when all that is needed is a good pocketkife.

If these don't help enough check through the beginners foum there are lots of projects and free information.

Ash

Hi Irmsrus! Welcome to the woodpile!

All you really need is a sharp knife, and a piece of wood. Then, as mentioned a couple times earlier, cruise through this forum as well as Rick's just to get started for ideas.

And Ron Davidson's eyesight is very, very limited. Not quite 100% blind, but not far off, either.

hello irmrus,

welcome to the board, the first thing you have to do is decide what type of carving you would like to do and then buy tools accordingly.

Hi!

Well, maybe it'd help if you asked yourself what made you interested in wood carving to begin with? Do you like duck decoys, caricatures, animals, relief or chip carving? Have you ever worked with your hands before? If so, what parts do you like best?

Then get yourself some wood (basswood is great to start) a good sharp knife, strop, compound, a carving book, and you're good to go!

WOW... That in itself is very inspiring (to me anyway.) Thank you so much for that unintentional inspiration Mr. Davidson.
