Just posted a picture of the latest knife I made for a friend. Â*He's not a woodcarver, but does leatherwork, and he saw one of my small straight bench knives and mentioned that he wished he had one like that, and wanted to know where he could find one. Â*Well, now he won't have to look.....hope he likes it! http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/...&members=1 Al |

Sure wish I knew where I could find a bench knife like that, Al. ...seriously, it looks like a great knife, I'm sure your friend will love using it.

I'd like to have any or all of those knives. Your friend is a lucky person. I like the drawknife. You said you 'forged' it. How did you do that? Just wondered if you have all the blacksmithing tools or made your own tools too. Great looking tools.

That drawknife isn't mine......Cpt. Bandaid did that one! I wish I had the where-with-all to do that kind of work. The smaller detail knives I made are forged from 3/16' drill rod in a 'one brick forge' that was posted by Rick Ferry (I think) or maybe it was BandAid. Either way, that works great for small forgings. There are several other knife makers on this board who have an uncanny grasp of metalurgy....I've just followed their advice. Al |

Thats a great looking knife Al! I have gotten to the point where I really like the drop point or 'warncliff' whatever you call it! I took the blade out of the last one I made....it wasn't working? Heated it to red, quenched..was too hard. Heated it as berg said to straw color and now is both soft and brittle? So I just took it out of the handle....someday if I send you something else, I will throw it in and see if you want to play with it or at least tell me what you think is wrong...must be poor steel?? :

Nice looking knife ALA. Haven't forge any knife blades but has made a hunting knife out of a old file. Another interesting hobby, Forging! We have a blacksmith who comes every year at our Tractor days here in SEF and May people spends hours watching and asking questions, Including myself. Another is the broom maker. Both are dieing arts in themselves.

Hi Ho, I don't want to sound like I'm preaching to you. As I understand it, the Warncliff blade is like a sheepsfoot blade. My penknife has a clip blade, spey blade, and a sheepsfoot blade. Most general use carving knives have the sheepsfoot blade. Took me awhile to get used to it. Now I like it better than the spey blade. The drop point blade is shaped much like a dagger blade end but not sharpened on the top. Hope this helps? :

Hi AA, What is a 'one brick forge'? Is it hard to make? I'd like to try one just to see if I can make it and use it. Thanks.
