Default A new experience!

I was invited to our local elementary school to demonstrate carving for the first graders last Friday. They were having a Civil War Re-enactment and the teachers thought carving would be interesting for the children.

I was a bit nervous about doing it, but the experience was terrific. I got very little carving done because the children had so many questions, I couldn't believe how interested they were!

After I finished up the teachers took them outside so they could try carving soap with popsicle sticks. I wondered how that would work out...well, all I can say is there is a lot of talent waiting to be let out of those little hands! How creative they were!! All in all a very rewarding experience! One I suggest you try if you have the chance! Callynne

P.S. If you want to see some pictures, I put some I took of the kids (and their teachers) on my Latest News and Updates Page

Wow! Look at all those soap shavings in the lawn! That reminded me of that Beverly Hillbilly"s episode with Jed on the front porch of the mansion whittlin', then when Mr. Clidesdale drove up Jed's hounddog rose up from underneath a two foot high pile of shavings. Smile

It's always nice to see someone spreading the carving story with the next potential generation of carvers. From the pictures I believe that I made out at least one "heart" and what appeared to be a car. Wish that I could've been there. Good job!

Yes, it was a great time! You're right Lightningbolt, there were hearts, cars, trees, even a harmonica...which before I could stop him, he attempted to play! Now that was really funny, he laughed the hardest...once he quit spitting out Ivory soap! Callynne

Good work Callynne! Spread the joy of carving as often as you can. I do soap carving each year with the second grade students at the elementary that my kids attend and have done it with the fourth graders for the last couple. I am always amazed at the potential of some of the kids. Even the ones who end up with little more than a pile of soap shavings are delighted and excited by the chance to try it.
