Al, that is really nice, I'd said it's a very presentable cane! I even learned a new work...hame....never heard that before! Talking Callynne

Callynne, a hame is a brass decoration that goes on a horse collar. I'm not sure if they had a practical application or if they were merely decorative. Al |

I did a search on the Internet on Hames. I found these definitions: Hame(s) (Jambles,Seals, Siles or Hains). A pair of projecting "horns" on a horse collar through which the reins pass. Hame knobs. Finials, usually of brass fitted to the top of the hame for decoration pruposes. My guess is somebody got the idea of using hame knobs from the horse's collar on canes. Bob

there are two pieces, usually oak, that are fastened around a horse collar. They connect at the bottom, and are then latched at the top, and the reins pass through slits in them. They keep the reins from just hanging along side the horse where they could potentially get tangled. Sometimes they are all metal, but usually wood, and the nicer ones have the brass knobs on the top, makes them very showy! Especially as a cane topper as we've seen here! I was fortunate to have a job in Boston one winter taking care of Percheron horses, gentle giants! My pay was $15 per week, 2 real meals a day plus all the horse feed I could eat, and a bunk in the tack (harness) room! I just about froze to death but I wouldn't have missed it for anything short of a ride south! Wade |

Love the Hame, got to get me one. Want to see the stick, it is so hard to see detail on a photo of a cane. I've tried every trick in the book and my photos just don't show what is really there and unique about the stick. We'll be by in July.
