Boy, I picked up a bad habit! I getting so used to my tools and absorbed in my work that when carving I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing. The last several weeks wood chips have been collecting on my gouges and unconsciously I've been squeeze wiping them off with my gloved hand while pausing between cuts. Well most of the time my glove is ON! Ouch!! a couple times. I've definitely got to quit that habit. I'm remembering Colin's writing about his habit of standing back looking at his carving with the CHAIN SAW AT HIS SIDE.....RUNNING! I hadn't thought it about it until writing this but I'll bet there is something I can do keep the chips from clinging to my gouges. I'm remembering now chips have been clinging to the TV screen also. Maybe a humidifier? I wonder if I'm the only one with a bad habit?

the only time chips stick to my knife is when I am carving a golf ball. Thought it had something to do with the rubber. Never had it happen with wood.

It is really dry here in Colorado. Lots of static electricity. I really don't remember where I learned the trick but if you use those Fabric Softener sheets for the Clothes Dryer (and I prefer the used ones, they don't feel as waxy) and wipe your tools down, the chips don't stick. It works for me!

Fabric softener sounds like a great idea, I've been using an old bench brush set upside down on the table.

Might explain why the chips were clinging to that plastic table at your place last Thursday. I think it's static electricity.

Our humidity this morning is 14%. It gets pretty annoying. I hate those clinging chips. Anything to knock them down is good. I think a humidifier would work too, I just don't have one. Bob |

I have had allot of trouble with static electricity also . I walked across the room and Lou sticks his nose in my hand and we both get shocked. I don't how bad the chis are sticking though. The brush idea is a good one. Ron

We have lot of humidity here and chips still stick to my tools, I will try the fabric softner trick, thanks Bob. As for bad habits, I have done the same thing, I try to always have my glove on. Dave Last edited by Gulf Coast Handyman; 01-18-2009 at 06:08 PM. |
