I find, there is nothing more accomplished, or spiritually liberating in wood work, than innovating or producing a tool or instrument to be used in the advancement or assistance for everyday society and/or communal living or self reliance. Especially when a tool is fabricated from the natural elements that surround us. These netting shuttles whittled from various woods i have collected in my surroundings are the perfect example of this... These are just some of the netting shuttles i have produced to make a variety of meshings for everyday purpose... Ive made everything from Laundry bags, to swag nets, to cargo style nets, fishing nets, to trout nets, and even toy hammocks...(in the future i will attempt sleeping hammocks) The use of these tools is limitless, with the exception of doing dishes, shoveling snow,..... and.... oh yeah!... changing diapers! In the near future i will produce a tutorial on whittling and/or carving these wonderful and useful tools, including other tools as well.... I would advantageously encourage people to try projects like these, as to credit the many wonderful uses. Added here are 2 bags i produced using a few of the netting needles shown (the 2 flat sticks are aids used to size the mesh). Sincerely, Bob Vega (lAzY cARvEr)

Hi Rob, Looks like you have enough to keep you busy for a while, very nice job on all. Every now & then I see similar shuttles at Native American Artifact Shows made by ancient man. Appreciate you letting us take a peek at your "stash". Dan |

I know this is common in many parts of the world but not so much here. Ever think of writing an article for WCI? Dan |

I have not laid a hand on one of those since 1964 and I have forgotten everything. I was actually taught fish-net mending. "Man-Knitting." As much as I'd appreciate the carving tutorial, some applications would not be lost on us, either. |
