My local supplier of kiln dried basswood has dried up. I need pieces for a mantle approx. 8"x6-8"x6-7'. What other types of wood would be good for mantles? I also needs some smaller pieces about 12-14"x14-18"x 0.5-1"thick. I live in WV so places closest to me would be great but I could drive to surrounding states to pick up. Thanks!

Debbie: Welcome to the forum! If you can't find any locally, I suggest you contact Heinecke at Heinecke Wood Products (phone number at web site). Dale will cut basswood to any size you want. Claude |

I did call Heinecke. They are suppose to call me back tonight. Only problem is they are so far away from me, I think the shipping prices will be too much for me. I'm still looking for closer but I may have to drive out there. - Thanks!

Well, if it's any help, I bought a cubic foot (12 board feet) last fall for about $52. Shipping was around another $12 to Virginia. Figure out how many board feet (12 x 12 x 1 inch) you need, and ratio the shipping cost. For other types of wood, Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Oak are all good woods. Check the yellow pages for "hardwood lumber" in nearby cities and you might find one who has timbers that are dried and can be used for mantles. Good luck on your search! One more edit... If you want ball park estimates on the costs of the other woods, here's a hardwood lumber place near me. Colonial Hardwoods Claude Last edited by Claude; 03-29-2010 at 05:17 PM. |

hi debbie, i live in ky and finding good wood is not a problem, if im making sticks i have access to lots of woods and if im making bird houses or any thing that needs flat wood then i use popular it carves really well and holds detail stains or paints and is easy to find. im a trim carpenter and it is 99 percent of what we use in high dollor homes, if u know any one who does this work then they have scrap wood that goes in the dumpster or is used for kindling. popular isnt as soft as bass but i prefer it. hope this might help. keep the chips coming.
