A few years back there was an article (in WCI I think). I would like to find the article again and am having no luck. This was a carving of a woodspirit face about 15 inches in diameter and about 3 inches thick. There was a face in the middle with leaves radiating out to the edge. What made this carving distinctive, was that the eyes were blank, giving the face a mysterious look like the spirit was in a kind of trance. There was some discussion in the article and maybe on this forum about the pros and cons of putting in some pupils. Hope someone remembers this carving and can point me in the right direction. At the time, I didn't have the carving skills to carve the spirit face, but would now like to give it a try. Thanks all! |

Thanks Claude - The one I'm looking for was not done by Laura Irish and the eyes were blank - no irises or pupils.

Here's a picture I made a few (4 or 5) years ago as I was preparing to carve this wood spirit. At the time, I carved a test out of some cedar I bought at Lowes, and that was when I discovered that I needed some more experience before I tried this in good wood. I'm now ready, but can't find the original article. Does this ring a bell with anyone? |

Hey Dan, It is from the book Elements Of Woodcarving by Chris Pye. The article starts on page 36 of my book. |

Edge - That's it! Thanks so much! I've got the book and found it right away. I'm all set, and have some nice Honduras mahogany for the project.
