I kno its late in theday to answer Colin.but anyhow. All the points made are valid and good advice. Remember that most people like to pay for what they get, as it relieves them of all obligation. Louis

Colin, If they are personal friends, I'd give it to them, if not, charge your normal fee. There have been some great suggestions and I'm sure you'll do whatever is right.

Dan's correct on this one. Just think where the Undertaker business would be if your concerns came into the picture each time someone came by to do business. Also, it's best to settle a commissions price up front before you begin the job. While I don't do commissions anymore when I did I always told them what the cost would be with the understanding that if they didn't like it they were under no obligation. I also never accepted any front money so I was always free to work at my own pace.

We sell memorial benches that people install in out local parks for people to use. They sell for $125 plus the cost of the bench.

Colin,
Having been in the funeral business for 30 years I can tell you that talking prices up front is one of the most difficult things to do when people are grieving the loss of a loved one, but it must be done. In the long run, it is an act of consideration for the family because they are dealing with emotions that should not be complicated with unknowns such as service costs or, in your case, how to approach the subject of paying for your work. They will appreciate and respect you for being honest with them in regard to the price of your work and it should be made as uncomplicated as possible. The Golden Rule will see you through on this one.

I agree with Bart. I just donated to a fund to help a young boy here get to NYC so he can get needed heart surgery. Just pick a charity or have them donate to that kind of fund too?
