What is on your Christmas List that is carving related? I need some ideas for a gift for my dad and I'm hoping your lists give me some ideas for my dad. Thanks in advance for your help! |

Gosh, but that covers a lot of territory. So it depends. How long has he carved? Where does he live? What kinds of carvings does he do? Power? Hand? caricatures? Animals? birds? Chip? Is there a good carving supply business close to where he lives? If he's a fairly new carver, I'd get him a Helvie knife or one of Rick at Little Shavers' knives. A fine diamond sharpener (about the size of a credit card) can be carried and used about anywhere. How about a gift subscription to Wood Carving Illustrated if he doesn't already suscribe? (See the link on the left, top part of this screen for "Give a Gift.") What about a gift certificate for him to pick out 2-3 (or however many you want to pay for) carving books (see those listed on the right of this screen.) And the ultimate, if you knew what he liked, pay his registration to attend a carving workshop or some private carving lessons--if he's a fairly new carver. Just a few ideas. Donna T

Gift certificates to any wood carving related store. That way he can use it to buy what he really needs. Also a subscription or renewal to WCI can't hurt either!

A new carvers glove or some thumb guards are always welcome.

I asked my sister for one of these. I actually asked her if she could make one - she has a nice sewing machine.

I agree with those that suggest wood. This is a gift that he will really appreciate and it is "expendable" so next year you can get him some more, unlike a good knife or other pieces of equipment which he will have for years. When my father was getting on in years we found him really hard to shop for and although he wasn't a carver he loved to make wooden projects. So each year I would go to the local mill and buy him $75-$100 worth of various dimensions of pine lumber. He loved it and by the time next year rolled around he was ready for another supply. Wayne |
