Default Need Help With Carving Flagstone Rocks on Cottonwood Bark

Hello all, I am hoping someone will have a suggestion for me. I have been carving for a couple of years and thought I was getting pretty good at it until I made this mistake. I have Rick Jensen's book Carving Tree Bark (really great book) anyway Iam carving just a single whimsy house and when I went to carve in the flagstone I drew in the lines but I went to deep with the 12mm V tool. I did not notice this till I started carving in the flagstone itself. The stones are not tight on top of one another. They look like they are kinda floating. After examining the book I noticed that the author did not go that deep with the V tool. I need to know what to do to make this carving look good. Can I use like a light or dark wood putty in between them to make it look like there is mortor in between the flagstone rocks? Iam at a loss as to what to do. I don't want to can this house cause IMO it is a really nice whimsey house. Any suggestions out there will be really appreciated. Am I right in assuming when you make rocks in the bark you don't go deep with your V tool. The book doesn't really say but by the pic's the V tool cut looks shallow. This book is great but I wish they would have said to make sure you keep your V tool cut shallow on the rocks. Sometimes people will miss the picture right in front of them I know I did. Help! Thanks, Jim Stiver

Jim,
If you used a v tool that went too deep, you may be able to correct it by taking some of the surface off of the stones. This would serve to bring the stones closer together as the distance between the stones will be closer together near the bottom of the trough that the v tool made. Also, you might try making some of the stones appear deeper than the stone next to it. This would bring the stones closer together. I hope I am understanding your problem correctly.
