Stiller's has a pattern for just about every animal, bird, fish, etc., you could think of. You might have to jiggle the sizes a bit. http://www.stillerpatterns.com/

I'm going to put my big foot into my big mouth here folks..... but with thousands of carvers spread out across this here blue and green marble who have spent the time and energy to develop their own patterns and who are not worried one iota about copyrights and who would love nothing more than to share their work with fellow carvers, how come we don't see more offers to share patterns free on the forum? In fact, how come we don't have an entire thread dedicated to homegrown patterns? I'm sure Stiller's and Christian are great people as are a number of other sites that offer patterns but not every carver out there can afford to buy the patterns that he or she needs. I can't speak for Whittling but I myself have learned to get pretty darned creative to when it comes to patterns because the cost of that pattern will also cover the cost of the wood that I need to buy. Okay! I've had my say... go ahead and give it to me with both both barrels!

This is something someone should suggest to the managers of this form, Eddy. I am just beginning and I don't fill like spending at least $5 for a book that I will only use maybe once. The only books I'll buy are ones that cover things that I will make a lot of the things the book covers many times. This is why I only really have 2 books, one being over The Nativity and the other is The Beginners Handbook of Woodcarving. They should probably make a space on this site to include patterns.

A great place to get patterns is your public library. They usually have a book or two or a dozen, on woodcarving. Most books on carving contain some patterns to try. Before you invest in your own books, have a look at them at your library, then if they fufill your expectations, you can order your own copy or just keep borrowing the library one when you need to. In Canada, you can request any book that's available through inter-library loan, so that any library in the country will send their copy to your local library for you to borrow, if they don't have it. This is an excellent resource that I have taken advantage of for years, and it saves you a lot of money by previewing books or researching a subject. Bob

If you're carving small-size animals, say for a Noah's Ark, try a Tractor Supply or similar store for the small animal figures they sell. They have a good variety, and not just farm animals. My store sells two scales, so it's pretty easy to find something the right size. Mike
