Default Need a bit of advice on a carving

Hey Y'all,
I'd like a bit of advice on a carving I'm working up. I plan to carve Captain Teague of pirates fame. I've attached the sketch that I plan to work from although some of the details will have to go away. I'll make a clay model prior to hacking up my nice wood. In this sketch he's leaning up against something. The question is what shall I have him lean against. I like that lazy slouch he has going on and I plan to keep it. I've thought about a post, a ships's wheel and perhaps a lamp post. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dan

With the complexity of the main figure, I think the ship's wheel would be the most appropriate, but for something less complex, you could have him leaning on a post at the end of a pier.

A post of some kind like a ships mast will work or you might try him leaning against a cabin (door).

How about the railing of a ship, there are usually several that would be appropriate to his stance. Or a pin rail, with belaying pins and coiled rope? Or with his back against the bulwark, as he's just come over the rail on the side of the victum ship, to take possession.

Looks like quite a challenge, what ever way you do it.

Personally, I like the Mast idea. Since there is so much detail in the main figure, something simple would "balance" the piece. Just my opinion.
