Seems I'm always looking for info on something, this time I got a few questions on bandsaws. I've spent the past couple of days cleaning up and refurbishing an old 12" bandsaw that I got from my dad. I built a new stand and had to find and hook up a motor etc. Got it all together this afternoon and everything seems to work fine, however all the blades that came with it were 6 tpi, X 1/2" wide. X 80" L. (Dad used it for heavier rough cuts ) I hope to use it for doing my rough outs for caricarure carvings. So most likly will be cutting nothing bigger than say 4X4 basswood. My question is what's a good size (tpi and width) for this type of cutting. I've located a company that will make almost any size that you could possibly want and they have a large varity of widths and teeth per inch available, so now I'm confused as to what might be my best size to get. I'm thinking that the 1/2" wide blade is too wide to allow me to cut smaller radius required in some roughouts Thanks ; Wayne |

Hi Wayne, did you do a search in the tool section, I know I had read a post on that topic. I will try to find it. Dave |

I've been using 3/16" and 1/4". The 3/16" allows tight circle cutting but more fragile than the 1/4". Not a problem just don't turn square corners. 6TPI is good.

Good sizes Bob and for one of the best blades, Timberwolf. Olsen are next best behind Timberwolf. JMHO!

I agree with Kenny - Timberwolf are great blades - the company will make your blade any length you need at no extra charge. Here's a link: Suffolk Machinery Corp. Claude |

Dave : No I didn't search that section; but I will. BoB:..........Thanks for the info; that;s what I was wondering ; ..........if I could get away with the 3/16". It's a pretty big old saw although it seems to work very smooth. I guess the good thing about it all is the supplier that I located will only ship orders of 5 blades or more. And seeing as I'll be "learning" I'll probably need some replacements........... |

80" blades are a standard length and are available from Timberwolf through several dealers, including Suffolk and Woodcraft. The 3/16" would be a good blade for a variety of projects but Woodcraft currently only shows 1/4" and 1/2" Timberwolf blades. I use a 1/8" blade for some of my more intricate carvings, but it's a bear to keep tracking right. Good luck. Mike Buy Timber Wolf 80" Bandsaw Blades, Bandsaw Blades, Saws - Woodcraft.com |
