Default Nee-Gaw-Nee=Ga-Bow

A ways back there were several photos posted of Peter Toth's series of Native American carvings (one destined for each state, as I recall).

For those of you collecting the photos, here's one from the side of M-28 in Wakefield, Michigan. Nice carving in a scenic setting on the south shore of Sunday Lake.

Thanks Al!

I'm probably the one that mentioned Peter Toth most recently. I knew there was one of his carvings up in Wakefield, and hope to see it some day. I'm down in Kalamazoo.

I got up to Mackinac Island 2 weeks ago, and since I was going to be up in northern Michigan, I thought I'd look and see where Wakefield was, with the thought of dropping in and seeing the carving. Turns out that Wakefield is a looong way west from the bridge. Oh well, someday I'll see it.

I was up to Porcupine Mountains State park last fall, which is a lot closer, but didn't know about the carving at that time. Anyway, thanks for the picture!

Al,
What a great thread Peter's carvings are amazing as is his story of why he carved them all over the United States you are right there is one in every state. He carved them because he was concerned about the plight of the native peoples of North America and wanted to pay tribute to them is the way I heard the story. Wouldnt it be great if everyone who has seen one in every state was to post of picture of it here on this forum. That would make 50 carvings just in the US. Now I know there are some here in Canada but I dont know where they all are. Here is a picture of one that my grandson and I found on a recent fishing trip in North Bay Ontario, Canada.

A really nice one exists in Cherokee, NC along route 441. I've seen it many times, will try and photo it next time through; maybe October. Al, when did that one on Sunday lake get set up? I've never noticed it when driving through. Maybe it is off the route.

Boy, Bill, that has been there since I think around 1975 or at the latest 1980....way before I retired. It's directly across M-28 from the State Police . I'll check the date on the plaque tomorrow when I bicycle past it. I took the back road around through Thomaston today so didn't go by the "Ga-Bow"!.(other side of the lake)

It's an amazing sculpture, and if memory serves me right, he didn't use ANY power tools, but went at it with chisle, gouge and mallet. Maybe an axe or two...........It took him over a month to finish and we had the opportunity to watch his progress from right across the street! We all figured he was a nut case when he started......instead he was just driven!
