Default Native Indian (needs finish)

I recently show this indian unfinished (WIP) and I finally finished painting it. Now I trying to figure out what finish to finish it with. It stands about 7" tall and 6" wide at the bottom. This was my first Indian bust and it turn out ok. There are some things I will do different next time. Carved out of Butternut... Hope you enjoy ot like.

He is looking good Mark! You might consider using "Feed and Wax" as a finish or bolied linseed oil, either one looks good on Butternut!

Thanks Gary, I sealed it with BLO first and then painted. If I put BLO on it now, I afraid it will make the face darker. Never used Feed and Wax. Do you just rub on and rub off?

You could also use Watco wax. I use a 50/50 natural and dark. The natural will be clear. Brush it on with a paint brush, then use an UNUSED shoe brush and buff it.
Happy Carving

Mark, that is AWESOME! I really like it. Where do you get your butternut? I carve almost exclusively in basswood that I get from the Hardwood Store of NC in Graham. I really like the way the grain of the butternut looks.

woody, they were having a sale on scrap pieces of wood at woodcraft store in Greensboro. I make canes too and buy different types of wood for my handles. you can find good deals on exotic woods there sometimes...

Mark, you asked for some pointers the only thing I can see that you might need to practce a little more would be the nose. You have all the major things down pretty good the face isn't flat, and the hardest thing I found doing was gettin the eyes deep enought and you done great on that. believe me your first attempt is way better than mine was. great job. I can't paint worth the darn, but if you have any other questions fire away be glad to help.

Feb, I get mine here at Menards. Ace hardware should carry it also, or any other lumber/hardware store.
