Default National Gallery woodcarving online

This existence of this may be old news but I just found it today.
For those who like a bit of history mixed in with their woodcarving:

Well, thank's for the link as I've never been to this one before. I've only just touched the surface about what's there but I really liked the rooster carvings from around 1940 by Marion Page.

I'm gonna enjoy looking around there. Thank's again!

It takes a little poking around, but it turns out that the rooster was carved in the 19th century by Wilhelm Schimmel. (There was an article about a Schimmel tiger in the Spring 2005 issue of WCI.)

The picture is a watercolor painting of the carving, by Marian Page.

It was part of a WPA project during the Great Depression to record some history of American folk art and design.

One of the astounding things about these pictures is how much they look like photographs of the objects the depict.

Astounding work on a couple of levels.

I think I'm going to try to get my wife to buy me a copy of the exhibition catalog.

Let me add my thanks too, RussL. I have added it to my del.icio.us online bookmark account.
