I don't think you will have any luck with that question unless you specify what you want to carve....?

far as birdcarving goes, Songbird Carving (1 and 2) by Rosalyn Leach Daisey.

I bought Songbird Carving 2 a few years ago and I got an autographed copy of Songbird Carving 1 for my birthday last year. The only problem is that I had a really bad carving accident a few months ago, and ruined a few pages in my autographed copy (they're all red : :-[).

If you want to learn how to carve birds, I haven't found a better book. Each book contains 4 or 5 projects with step by step instructions for carving a painting each bird.

Check them out at www.rozdaisey.comAs

I highly recommend it.

Chris.

Anything by Chris Pye would be a good choice.

Caricatures -
'Learn to Carve Faces & Expressions' by Harold Enlow
'Carving Caricature Figures from Scratch' Pete LeClair
'How to Carve Characters in Wood' H.S. Andy Anderson (very good, very small, and very expensive, suggest watching used book places and on line auctions and sooner or later you'll find it reasonable).

General ideas with a quick overview of about everything -
'The Big Book of Whittling and Woodcarving' E.J.Tangerman
Don't think I'll ever get done reading this one; over and over and over always find something I haven't read.

'Woodcarvign Tools, Materials & Equipment' Chris Pye

'The Art of Chip Carving' Wayne Barton

'Whittling' Bill Higginbotham

Steve, for animals I don't think you can beat Desiree Hajny, I love her work! For reference on animals Doug Lindstrand's books are fantastic. They are drawings, he's not a carver but I intend to own every book he puts out, his work is just that beautiful and very helpful to me in my animal carving (not that I'm getting any of that done right now, what with all the Santas I'm doing!!)!
Chris, how is your hand doing?? I think of you often and hope you have recovered completely!!
Thanks for the mention about Rosalyn Daisey's book. My daughter wants a chickadee carving for Christmas and I was planning on buying a 'bird book' and leaning toward's one of her's. Now that's definitely who I'll buy! Thanks, Callynne

P.S. Steve, I started carving a month before my 52nd Birthday, you have years and years more to carve before you even get to where I started!! You are SO LUCKY!!
