Hi gang, My wife was looking around my workshop the other day and said that she swears I have ADD. She says there are so many carvings in various stages of completion. Also when I get a new idea into my head I will work for hours sometimes 12 at a time without stopping because I cant wait to see the finished carving. I was wondering if any of you are the same? I think there are so many unfinished carvings because I get these new ideas and cant wait until the carving is finished before I try them. Once I am into that new idea I am relentless sometimes not even stopping to eat. I have seen me start one, get tired and go to bed only to get up at 2am and still be working on it in the morning. So how about you do you just have to see that finished carving and work until you do? Colin

I try not to start a new one until I'm finished with what I'm working on, but I admit, I have several started sitting here and there. I guess when a new inspiration comes along, you have start working it while it's fresh in your mind.

I don't think you have ADD... from what I read, your messages all make sense and you get a lot of carvings finished. very nice carvings at that. You seem well organized to me. Once you get past a few hundred unfinished carvings and still getting sidetracked....then you should worry...whenever I am handling a load of bark some of them just reach out and grab me. I will probably roughout a few new ones today...maybe I should start selling roughouts.........hmm Art |

Hi, My Wife said to me the other day as I was working on a duck. 'Now what did I tell you to do today' I said ' Oh! you forgot too'. . Later Gergie,

That sounds familiar Colin. I use to be like that.....doing three or four projects at a time, and forgetting to eat, or go to bed or even raise my head! But since the accident, I can only do one thing at a time and can only work in short spurts and then rest. Some days, I just sit there and think about what to do next and how to do it. But I can still carve and thats all that matters! Bob

I guess that I'm like Randy, one project at a time is my usual. Although comission work will come first, when one project is underway and I get a chance to do a comission piece, I will stop and do it. I paint and do my burning in the house, so I usually have a couple small things that I can work on in the evening while I'm roughing out. So after all is said and done, I guess there are several things on the go at once. It was raining here today, so had an opportunity to finish a walking stick from a piece of beach. It has been in the corner for about 6 yrs partly done. Never really thought about this before, just assumed that my old grey head wouldn't work on any more than one thing at once. LOL : |

I am a 'one thing at a time' carver though if I am doing a few sticks or bark carvings I will rough out (mark centerline and make the big cuts at the eye and base of nose) two or three before settling down to finishing them one at a time.

Colin, that is so funny! I hope the Mrs. will be coming along in November, I'd love to meet her too! I still like to have three pieces going at once, one in rough out, one in detail and one in painting stage. Things have been awfully hectic here for some time, not carving wise (family, company, etc. wise), but hopefully they are going to settle down now and I can devote the time I want to devote to my carving. Well, at least more of it, since the time I want to devote to it is EVERY WAKING MINUTE! Callynne

I have too many unfinished things going all at once. I never seem to have time to get anything finished. Maybe someday I'll get a round tuit?
