I had a small block of wood on my desk here, just mulling it over to see what I could think of to do with it. I decided on a simple whimsey; a ball in a cage. Not too hard, but more challenging than taking a square block and making it round, then square again only smaller. Whimsey 004.jpg Not very ornate. I'll make the next more fancy and refined. I'm still building confidence that I can do project. This one surprised me that I didn't ruin it, lol. The only tools I used was a knife for the majority, and a coping saw to release the ball. I could have cut it loose with the knife, but I wanted to make sure I kept the ball fairly round. Thanks for looking. TJ.

TJ, That looks great for a simple whimsey. I'm going to have to try making one of those. Stephen |

I like it! I carved two links in a wooden chain when I was a teenager. It was a challenge, but I was so proud of myself. Your whimsy is something to be proud of!

Great Job TJ, I tried to carve one but I broke one of the bars off.

Yours is a very nice ball-in-cage, especially for your first time. I suggest that you make the next one somewhat longer so the ball can move up and down. If you bore through the wood above and below the ball area you'll have more room for your knife blade. Here is a recent example: <img src="http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.co...ium/cage3f.jpg" /> Last edited by pallin; 07-12-2010 at 11:04 AM. Reason: typo |

Rook, I've made a few and know the challenge. Yours is very well carved with straight and clean cuts. The ball looks very nicely done also.
