Default My First Spoons

These are my first two efforts at making "eating" spoons. They are both in poplar, made from board stock rather than green wood. The first one is pretty clunky. It's really too deep for an eating spoon. The second one is a little better, but the bowl is too square for my taste. Both spoons are finished with food-safe mineral oil. I'm going to have to try Carl's beeswax finish soon.

A lot of people use a bandsaw or a carving axe to rough out the spoon shape. Not me! I use "Baby". She's the one in the fifth photo. A real working lady!

You know, Cliff, you are absolutely correct. I carved a third spoon that I am going to unveil on the Spoon Challenge thread in March. After that one I had to physically make an effort not to do a fourth and to get back to the lovespoon and the other projects I'm working on.

Remember, Sharon, you started this! I would have never tried to make Baby. She's dangerous when aroused. I acquired Baby more than 20 years ago. She ages well.

Thanks, Forrest. I've got a longer one I call Sally, but she's much slimmer. Not as many curves.

Thanks, Dave. I have a bigger one, but she's a little too high-speed, low-drag for this job.

Thanks, Big Dave. Baby actually is my detail knife. For totem poles!

I really like the form of the last spoon...very simple and elegant.

Are you carving another David Western lovespoon? I have just about finished the "intermediate" one in his book and just started one that I designed.
