A couple of weeks ago, there was a thread about comparing your first carving to the one you just finished. I couldn't locate it so will start it again as I've finally got my submission together. Anyway here they are. That short little fella was carved in 1976, he was my first cowboy and the second figure I ever carved. I took the body pattern out of the Andy Anderson book that my Dad had. He turned out pretty good I think and you can easily see the influence he had on the taller Cowpoke that came along 30 years later and stands beside him.

They are quite definitely of different styles, although side by side like that, it is also obvious they came from the same hand. Nothing wrong with the smaller figure at all, but the larger looks more relaxed, if that makes any sense. |

That shows you had the talent at the beginning!

Lynn, thanks for sharing. Pretty impressive second carving and first cowboy! I'd say you had a knack for this thing right off the bat. Obvious refinements and improvements along the way, but again, a great start. Chuck

Geez Lynn.....your first looks pretty darn good. The latest is a whole lot better, but you can see the basic skill at the early stage. Great work. Bob

Lynn's You said this was your first Cowboy , but how many carvings had you done before you did this? If that was your first carving, I am stunned. Ash |

Hi All, I can only echo what others have said...you obviouly had the raw talent. 2nd carving is that good and last carving shows refined skills and improved talent. Like "whitecree" your latest cowboy looks more relaxed and natural! Both carvings are great!! |

You was truly born into the carving world, both are good but your later carvings show the years of skills developed, I wonder if we had the tools then, that we now have today, would our carvings have be better, ? heck old trusty is a better tool than my old Barlow was.... ![]() I gave away all my first carvings to who liked them......so i have no benchmark.. or i surely would post
