Default My first finished carving

Comes a time when the time has come. I finally completed my first carving. It began as a practice based on David Brock's You Tube video on carving a basic wood spirit. It never occurred to me that since I was using stock nearly twice the width he used to modify the dimensions so he turned out looking like a cross between the wood spirit and a Tiki mask. So this is what a tropical wood spirit looks like... Kinda, sorta... Maybe? Critiques are encouraged as I will gladly accept advice.

The opposite side is a WIP (I hate to waste good wood), and I have a half dozen 5 minute wizards getting the final sealer to post in the next few days or so. The photos are not very good, but acceptable for an old Blackberry's 1.5MP capability.

Thanks for looking!

OK I screwed the attachment thing up on my first try. Let's see if I can get it right this time.

I like the natural wood with the stain....and for a first time it looks great. The best advice on any work to ask yourself>
What did I learn and what am I going to do next time?
Keep on working ... you are getting it!!

Walking Tooth was the one who helped me with my first Sprit Stick. He always insisted that I work hard throughout the day and night perfecting the art. Much heart.

Nice job! Pretty good for a newbie. I haven't finished a first carving yet, although I'm playing around with two or three right now. Hope my first turns out as good as yours!

I am always a fan of using color. The finished carving is a great start, and I hope it encourages you to continue. It is fun isn't it?

I think your wood spirit is a fine looking fellow, especially in that setting. I haven't done any spirits myself so I cannot offer any tips, all I can do is admire what you have done. Joe.
