| | Re: My First Carving! Alright - embarrassing after seeing Lynn's but I'll bite.
Here's my first "real" carving from about 5 years ago. I had a couple attempts prior to this where I didn't even get the face roughed out as far as I got with this one, and this one is far from complete. It's in a rock hard segment of maple from a tree limb that had been lying on the ground for who knows how long.
I got inspired by an article on carving a spirit face by Greg Wilkerson in (I think) the other magazine. So I made this attempt with a Flexcut knife and V-tool that had bought to try things out. I ended up with v-tool in a finger because the wood was so hard and I was hand holding it (no glove - though it wouldn't have stopped a v tool anyway) paying no attention to where it would go if it slipped. Duh!
After the injury I never went back to complete it and stopped trying for a few years (till I went to NEWR - Northeast Woodcarvers Roundup). But my wife loved it anyway and it sits on either the piano or a curio shelf in our living room. Been tempted to go back to try & finnish it, but like I said - ROCK hard so I leave it be. ;-)

| | Re: My First Carving! Well Chuck, if that's your first carving, it's a darn nice one, you did a lot better on your first than I did. I'm sorry about the Vtool slip, it happens and theres no way of stopping the odd error in judgement, My right thumb has a dead spot from a bad one but heck, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Keep carvin there buddy.

| | Re: My First Carving! What a great idea for a thread Lynn! If I can figure this out mine will appear below. Its a cypress knee (all one piece) carved using just a 1/4" and a 1/2" bench chisel. Its about 12" tall (not including the base). I made it for my wife back in the early/mid 90's...on back of the dudes jacket (out of view) there's a chip missing, and I can still line up the missing chip with the 1/2" scar across the back of my thumb...

| | Re: My First Carving! the important thing to realize is that lynn and many others didnt give up. we each start at a specific individual level-- the important thing is to keep carving --some of us need to improve more than others. i know some that have "stopped improving" but have a unique style all their own. judge urself-- not against someone elses work. |

Hope this works. This was my first carving, a relief on pine. Made my own gouges. Done in the 70's.
