I've yet to try a golf ball so I have no idea how hard they may be to carve. I think your Santa looks really nice, more so from a side view then face on. I can't tell if one eye is closed or not painted but other than that I think it looks pretty dang good for a first time golf ball carving!

Steve,
Here are my thoughts, just remember they are worth what you paid to get them. LOL!
One eye needs more definition, I'm like Sappy, I can't tell if he is winking or has one eye that needs more attention.
The mouth would be a little more obvious if you cut the beard just below his lower lip, maybe opened his mouth.
If you under cut his beard behind his chin to the edge of the golf ball cover, it'll give his face a little more definition.
I hope this doesn't sound mean, but it sounds like you are wanting some advise.
You have a great start on golfball carving and the youtube will help, too.
I've cut several golfballs since I've watch Gene's video, and have had a lot of fun with them.
Enjoy,
Michael

Not mean at all, I asked for it so i was expecting advice. All i did for the eyes was cut a deep hole in both, i think i must have painted over the one eye, because you are right it looks closed. I didn't even add a mouth, so that does need more definition LOL. I like the idea to undercut the beard, I couldn't figure that out last night. So i painted it black all the way around to try and make it stick out.

Good advice all, thank you. I am going to try another one today.

Steve

Steve,
Nice first try. if you are having problems figuring out the eyes you can always Raise the nose a little to make it look like the hat is pulled down over the eyes. I have a few santas golfballs.I'll put one on for you to see or check out my website

I use a little different way to make the eyes from what golfballcarver does. Not that it is better, it just what works for me. I make a "V" cut from the nose to the temple and stab the knife just a little where I want the pupil.
Also, I've found out that sometimes I have to draw the knife, like I'm cutting a steak, in order to get a clean cut.
This isn't a good picture, but I think you might be able to see what I mean about the eyes.
Have fun with it.
Michael

I think the carving is just fine. For me, it's the black outline that just doesn't seem to fit. Maybe Gold, Silver or Green instead? But again, the carving is just fine & yes, the one eye needs a little paint too.
