... is growing... Ok, not a lot for now, but I will add a new one from time to time. ![]() I don't like to do the same thing twice, so they should normally be all different. The first one I carved is on the left. And the new one is on the right. I used pine for all of them. The first one was finished with Folk Arts clear varnish. But I adopted a new finish, starting with the Xmas boot. And I love that finish. It's easy to apply, levels well, and the gloss level can be adjusted by using sanding paper or not between the coats, and by applying more coats. I used 2 coats on these. Here is a link to the product I use. Furniture Finishes - Finitec Canada And depending if I'm using a wash or straight from the bottle acrylics, it also affects the finish. There are more things that I experimented with but I'll have to carve more boots to show the difference it makes. I'm no expert in carving and finishing, but I thought I could share what I learned so far. Thanks for looking, Gilles http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.co...500/Boots3.jpg
Cool Beans! Calk Boots are a symbol of the industry where I have grown up. My dad was a logger and a mill worker, and then my husband and his family have all been mill workers, choker setters...you name it... in the timber industry somewhere I make mine big rounded toes...1930's and 40's style. Spray paint them black, sand off a smidge here and there and then use a clear spray sealer as a finish. Boy howdy! Here is a link to an image of my old woodsman doll from the image gallery. He has on a pair of "rustic" calk boots I love him! My boots have evolved some, but I still love the roughness of these. It seems to gather together the cold misty morning feeling I associate with loggers and woodsmen. Enjoy! I felt pretty clever when I came up with these! I can't wait to see what you create!Oh - r u in the ornie swap? Copy_of_keoma_011 - Wood Carving Illustrated Photo Gallery

Hey, thanks for posting it, I wasn't sure of the real look for someone to have souvenirs... Do you have pictures of the ones you carve these days? Gilles |

Cool... Btw, when my father was young, he was leaving next to water and early every morning, he was going with his father in a rowing boat to salvage any wood they would find floating around. There was a wood mill close by so they would find very nice wood sometimes. After reading about the wood you use on your blog, it reminded me of that detail about my grandfather... And my grandfather was building boats and carving in his spare time. It's too bad he left too early, because I would have loved to learn to carve from my grandfather. And it's too bad my father didn't inherit the carving talent of his father. But last week, I learned from my carving teacher that he knew the son of my father's brother (my uncle), and that he even teached my cousin how to carve. So it seems that I'm not the only one who likes carving in the family. It may not seem like much, but knowing that I saw my cousin only once in the last 20 years and that both my teacher and my cousin live over 1 hour of where I live, it's kind of a funny thing. And my teacher lives 2 streets from where I was born. Strange coincidence... Now, for a different type of corks... ![]() Cheers, Gilles Last edited by gtech; 10-31-2009 at 06:28 PM. |

I just finished this hard working boot. That's my try on a calk boot. I need to use more rivets on the next one I need to take better photos ![]() ![]() It's a fun type of boots to make... Oh, btw Keoma, I forgot to tell you that your old woodsman doll is really cute with his calk boots... I'm not in any swap right now because I already have too many things to do, but I sure would like to be in one some day. Gilles Last edited by gtech; 12-03-2009 at 07:45 PM. |
