Default movable jointed doll

Here is the first of two carvings that were a real brain drain for me to construct. I flew by the seat of my pants on this one. Here is a progression of his construction. If anyone else has made jointed dolls or marinets (sp?) please respond. Is there a book that helps with joint construction? I am interested in making a walking puppet. I posted this one in Holiday but haven't got much response so I thought I'd try it here. I hope that is ok.

Wanda, he's really neat! Check out the Lotz doll sight, great info there. Also google Hitty dolls and peg wooden dolls.I found some good instructions for carving joints on them. Can't remember everything right now, because it's 6:17am here and I'm not fully functional in the brain department yet! Only 1 and a partial cups of coffee so far!

Thanks Sharon, I looked at the Hitty dolls after starting him but haven't checked out Lotz dolls or PEG wooden dolls. I was searching jointed wooden dolls. I will try both. Keoma's tutorial was a big help too but alas, I had already jumped in over my head when she responed and told me about it.

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of taking a seminar on puppet carving. The instructors were from the Czech Republic. We made two different types of puppets during the two week seminar.

The joints we used were mortise & tenon type and some were made of leather. The mortise & tenon type joints only allow certain type of movement, much like the joints we have at the knee and elbow. Leather joints allow for a much wider range of movement.

The knee & elbow type joint uses a flat area to limit the movement so that those joints will move like the joints of a human. We used a different type of joint for hips & shoulders.

All the joints are simple to make but difficult to explain without pictures. "Folk Carving with Shane Campbell" would be a good resource in making small doll type jointed carvings.

Hope this helps some…..

Thanks Terry. That does make sense. I will look for that book.

Wanda, I can see lots of thought and work went into creating your Santa. While looking at him I thought he remined me of a puppet. We might have to start calling you the 'Puppet Master.' I hope even though he was a lot of work I'd love to see you do more of this type of carving. I think you've got the idea girl.

Kathy,
I did enjoy Santa (after he was done). I have another one started made with Bass wood and black walnut. I am having to let him sit a bit cause the walnut is giving me fits. (I have Lupus and fibromyalgia and they are acting up).
I hope I feel stronger in a couple of days and can jump in on him again.

Wanda,

Here is a link to a web site you will find very interesting. These are the folks who came to the US a few years ago and conducted a few seminars. I was fortunate enough to get to attend.

They have some great information about constructing marionettes along with the joint construction. In fact they have the entire process from start to finish.

Hope this helps some...

Hi Terry,
That site is awesome. I bookmarked it so I can go back to it and study it in depth. I am trying to tie up loose ends and get everything together to do a show in Tulsa in July, my first one for carvings. Thanks for the link to this very informative page.
