parkwayman - thanks for the question. No they aren't painted in.

For the eye-glint - What I did was to take a #11/3 gouge and carefully push it straight in, right at the upper eyelid and angled just slightly up under the eyelid. Then I pulled the gouge straight out being careful not to disturb that little eye-glint piece of wood.

For the pupil - What I did was to take appropriate gouges and gouge out a hole, rounded in toward the bottom and toward the bottom of that eye-glint piece of wood.

Then I carefully blackened in the recessed pupil area using a wood burner with a very small tip. I also blackened in the stem of the eye-glint.

Then I shaved off a very small slice of wood from the top surface of the eye-glint so that the surface of the eye-glint was aimed in the direction the eye was looking.

The blackened eye pupil area, and the shadows, create the over-all effect.

really awesome. i love how he looks so aged, and the fine details around the eyes are awesome
