Default Mountain Man in bark

The pictures below are a piece inspired by Vic Hood in his book "Carving Found Wood." I did this one a year or so ago trying to work out details and features. Sorry for the dark pictures. Got to get more light when I take them. Comment and critique welcome. Shalom.

Very nice John, always like the mountain man. Would love to try that bark sometime. Looks like nice wood to carve.

Thanks Patrick. I really do love the bark. It carves well, but is a little tricky - have to be able to and willing to make adjustments when pieces fall off or give way. One benefit is the neat things that happen when you cut into it and find all the great colors and grains. Great wow factor with it.
Thanks Gene. My wife says I have to get rid of some of it. It is filling the house - only so many nails you can put in the panelling in the basement or bathroom walls.

You carved a very nice face. Good depth to the face and very good all around. The only comment I have is that to me looking at the carving from the distance my eye is drawn to the bark at the top and bottom and not to the great face you carved.

Thanks Troll.

Forrest, I too like the natural. What was great was when I cut into the lower part to do the leather fringe the color of the wood changed right where the fringe needed to be. It was a lot of fun.

Thanks on the commets Andy, I looked at it again. I can see what you are saying. What might you suggest for the next piece or even modification here. My thought process on it, Andy, was to make sure that the carved part made up more than the other parts put together. I think I am okay at the bottom, the top may be too dominating. Perhaps if the heavier piece on the top had been the bottom we would be okay. Know any way I can lift this carving off and turn the wood around?

Thanks Merle and Sharon.

John K Karver.
