Default Mountain Man

I finally finished carving this mountain man. I must say that I had a lot fun doing it. It's carved out of butter nut and I found that the wood split easily if my knife got a little dull. The rifle is removable because I thought it wood break very easy if I had to transport it. I used a wash to add the color to it. I hope you like it and your comments are welcome. Dave

Hi Chuck! Thanks for your comment of kind words. As far as the rifle goes, it was a bit tedious but you never know what you can accomplish until you begin.

Nice carving and painting, if he drinks that jug he won't hit very many rabbits.

MA, burning and carving is not the same as playing with matches and knives.

Hi Gene, Mark and Feb! Thanks for your nice comments about my mountain man. One comment I would like to add about carving butternut concerns the brittleness of the wood. If you have trouble with the wood cracking and splintering, dampen the area you are working on with a 50/50 mixture of Isopropyl Alcohol and water. This will help. I keep a spray bottle of it on my workbench. I also try to keep my knife as sharp as possible. I think the pretty grain of the butternut is worth the extra effort.

Thanks again - Dave
