Hey Woodtrapper, I tend to go in another direction everytime I start out with my carvings as well. They say the wood tells us what we should be carving. Your wizard turned out well. I'm getting ready to do one myself, however, I'm using 4 feet of birch for mine. We'll see what turns out.

Hey Irishman, It seems you carve a lot of birch. The birch here in North Carolnia ia either paper birch or curly birch and is not very big in diameter.I recently came across a fallen birch about 10-12'' in diameter.I have carved the root but not the trunck. Are we talking about the same kind of wood.Thank you for the compliment.Davy

Great job on the spirit! I really like how you "flowed" the hair into thin air off the top of the stick. After my gazillonth woodspirit walking stick I don't think that I've ever done that although I have done a few baldheaded ones.

Looks great and thanks for posting!!

I get my birch locally (Nova Scotia) or when I visit family and friends back home in Prince Edward Island. I had a few occasions to carve some basswood someone gave me and I find birch is next closest thing. It really takes oil well so its perhaps my favorite wood to carve. I either use yellow or white birch and this type of birch grows to a fair size. Here are some pics I have of birch in my shop ready to be carved up. The one laying down (bark removed) is a piece of white birch I'm working on now.
