Default Mountain Laurel Spirits

Here's a couple of guys I yanked out of the woods here recently and I thought I would share them. The one on the right is a cane and the one on the left is still a stick with no handle.

They both have great expressions but that first guy looks pretty intense. It appears like you burned them as well.

Hey woodtrapper, an intense expression on both spirits. I like the ivory look of the finished wood. Tom H

I would like to say first that I do what the wood tells me to do and that determines the expression.Carving found wood, you never know when you will hit a rotten spot.I purpossely hunt for decomposed pieces and I think it makes for a great face.As Patrick said, it looks like it was purposely burned or scorched but that is the way I found it.I just add a semigloss finish and let the wood tell the story.I really like working with the mountain laurel and it's ivory like look.

It's always nice to find those special sticks with nature's signature already in place which leaves only a little enhancement left for the artist. They look great!

Mountain laurel is also one of my favorites for walking sticks but it's usally hard to find it straight enough in my area. When I do find a good stand of straight sticks, there's always a lot of them in that area. Must be in the genes.

Woodtrapper, great work! I thought they were woodburned too! The finish is really nice, the mountain laurel does look like ivory! You've done a fine job with it! Thanks for sharing! Deborah
