I am looking into carving some morel mushrooms on top of a few walking sticks. I am was wondering if anyone had any pictures or tips they could provide as to how to approach this. I know it is fairly simple, but didnt want to miss anything too obvious....Thanks!

Donna (Pyrogite) did some outstanding morel mushrooms on sticks, not sure if she is still on here, haven't seen her for a long time....and I don't think she has a site? You might check out the gallery and see if she had posted any.

Willie, A few more weeks to go here in Ohio. Til the morels will show up. Here's a cane that I am doing for a friend. If really interested, check out my Yahoo album, under walking sticks and there are several examples there. The cane top is carved out of walnut, while the walking sticks are carved out of ash and hickory. Actually the walking sticks are hoe handles. I power carved both examples. Tom H

Wow! Very nice!!! I dont have any power tools, actually, I only have a pocket knife! What handtools would you recommend that would be useful for this type of work? Thanks! |

Willie, That's quite a challenge...But, there are many ways that you might achieve the results you desire. First, I always try to make do with what I have on hand when trying new things. So, what you could do is to obtain a stout stick (how handle replacement), and a different piece of softer wood for the actual top (mushroom). Use your pocket knife to whittle the top piece into the general shape of the morel mushroom. The "holes" in the mushroom could be achieved with a power drill and a common drill bit. By working the drill bit around in wood you could get the desired effect. The stick shaft could be left in the round shape of the hoe handle or you could change the shape to make it more interesting. This could be done with your pocket knife, file, random orbit sander, draw knife, or a spoke shave. The mushroom top can be attached with a 3 inch dowel. That's one way to do it, without an investment in new tools.....Tom H
