Default More cottonwood bark carvings!

These are my next two attempts at cottonwood bark carving (I'm definitely enjoying working with it!). Glad I bought a box of the stuff....thank you Art and Dorothy Olver! Callynne

Wow Callynne, Great faces on the bark carvings. I have thought about realistic instead of suggestive faces on my carvings but what I am doing works for me for now.

Hint Hint, I still have two free paulownia santa blanks left, could ya give one a good home? (Christmas In July Thread)

Beautiful job Callynne. Those Santa's would grace any tree or walll that was lucky to become their home! Well done on both the carving job and the painting job!

Thanks everyone, glad you like them!! You're right big brother, I'm definitely hooked!!

Ash, funny you mentioned the 'red stuff', my intention on these pieces (and the Green Woman) was to use gentle washes of paint to lightly tint them. I just can't pull it off! I'm afraid I'm like Nancy G has said, stuck with the 'plastic' look!

Art, I'm so happy you like what I've done with your fantastic wood! It has been a challenge to me, both in the wood and my approach to carving. Having always started before with my drawings and a block of wood, this is definitely a new learning experience!

Speaking of which, Goody, I had read your post and knew about your very generous offer. I didn't consider it for me since I haven't ever used blanks. In fact, I didn't even know there was such a thing when I started carving! Your challenge interested me but time, unfortunately isn't on my side, I have way too many committments to take on more right now and I know there isn't a chance I could get to it this year! I think it's wonderful of you to do this for everyone and I look forward so much to seeing what everyone comes up with!

Bill and Wade, each time I do a face I'm a little surprised it comes out looking as realistic as it does...now I have to learn how to put more expression and movement into my pieces! So much to learn!!

Thanks Bob, I hope their new owners enjoy them as much as I did making them for them! Thanks again everyone, for all your great compliments!! Callynne

OUTSTANDING Santa Callynne. If only I could carve a realistic face lik you do, I would have accomplish something. I have found that washes are not as effective on bark as thicher paint. May be why I don't paint most of mine. But I do love your bark Santa. The little bride said WOW. Need to post her bark Sunflower and cat and mice carvings. Different but nice.
