I thought I would demonstrate my whittling ability by carving a Mobius strip... The Mobius strip is named after the German mathematician August Ferdinand Mobius (1790-1868), who invented it. This Mobius strip was carved from a single piece of basswood. The finished carving presents a continuous or never ending path on it's surface. It appears to be two pieces somehow hooked together. However, if you start at any place on the three cornered split strip you will return to your starting point. As always, all comments and criticisms welcome!

Nice Mobius strip. You can take a 2" wide strip of newspaper and give one twist and tape the ends together. Now lay it down on a flat surface and place the point of a pencil in the middle of the strip. Pull the strip along the surface of the table keeping the pencil in the middle of the strip. When you finish you will see that it only has one surface!! That's why they were used as conveyor belts. It took twice as long to wear out. If you take that same strip and split it lengthwise along that mark you made you will not have two pieces, but one with a double twist. I used to confound my daughter with this. Now I just confound myself when I remember what I got up for!!!! Tim
