anyone ever carve a mobius? just wondering what pitfalls you might have run into. Im going to eye ball, the curves etc, but does it need really accurate measureing etc?

Here are some directions for carving a mobius. Exciting Scout Crafts - Mobius Triangle This is a quasi mobius I carved with a ball in the center. |

rickm: Take a long strip of paper, say, 1/2 inch wide, and 11 inches long. Make it into a loop, but twist it 1/2 turn. The result is a Mobius curve. If you put your finger on one edge, and trace around it, you'll arrive back where you started; it only has one side and one edge. You can make extra loops in the paper, and do all sorts of things with it; just remember that it has to have an odd number of twists: 1, 3, 5, etc. If you can trace the edge and not arrive back at the starting point, it's not a real mobius curve. After you have a paper one that looks like something you'd like to carve, use that as a 3D pattern for your wooden one. Claude |

I cant do anything without making a plan. I follow the Norm Abram "measure twice, cut once" The mobius is a popular subject of sculptors, and one of those natural phenomenoms that intrigue us.

nice carving nomad, really fine shapes, but it is really a moebius ?? as claude has explained, a moebius has only one side, but when you run your fingers around the outeredge on which it stands, you end up again there when you once looped, but you should end on the inner edge...(at least that is what i can see from the foto, and if i am wrong i apologies in advance...)... also , if i were doing a moebius, i would emphasis the characterizing property, and thus make the sidewalls much thinner (we need in a carving but true moebius has not). the curving nature of the carving would provide stability yes, lorax that is a fine moebius
