Default Mixed wood carving

Howdy folks,

I saw reference to an interesting style of carving online the other day. The carver takes a dozen thin (1/8" to 1/6") pieces of wood and wood glues them together, in a vise overnight. He then bandsaws and power carves a dog.

While I can imagine there'd be some rather annoying issues with density in terms of carving and sanding, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

I have made a lot of pens doing that. With power carving there those issues would not be real big issues. Also if the density of the woods is similar it is not a problem. You do have to pay attention to how you line up the grains so that when you’re carving you are working with grains going in the same direction.

Howie:
William (username) here on the forum has carved numerous duck decoys and other other carvings this way, including a female head, if I remember correctly. Look in his gallery, or search his old posts.
Heres one example: Pine Bust
and another: 2 new pine bord wip's
